Whether a weekend away or a day trip getaway, enjoy the best of Michigan in Saugatuck, one of the state’s most popular lakeside town.

Vacation getaways are fun but they can add up. If you want to feel like you’re on vacation but sleep on your own bed keep Saugatuck on the short list. We left the house at noon and left Saugatuck after sunset and enjoyed the perfect family day. Follow our itinerary and have fun!

Saugatuck Dunes State Park

Saugatuck Dunes State Park requires a Michigan State Parks pass for admission (most Michigan drivers have them with annual plate renewal). Park the car and get ready for a hike through the beautiful forest. The beach trail is .75 miles from the parking lot to the beach. Bring a wagon or prep your kids for a walk – they’ll have so much they shouldn’t mind it. The sandy shore of Lake Michigan is picture perfect and adventurous kids/adults can climb up and slide down the dunes. If your family likes disc golf there is an impressive course. There are no indoor restrooms but there are portapotties.

The Southerner

If the beaches don’t bring you back to Saugatuck, The Southerner will. The low country menu gets high marks. Be ready to wait for a table but it’s worth it. It’s also easy because the outdoor picnic tables provide space to wait and the outdoor bar allows parents to indulge while hangout outside. Inside the quaint restaurant has an amazing menu that will satisfy kids and grown-ups. Get the fried chicken meal and pick out a few sides. The Blue Crab & Langostino Calas on the starter menu is what will be bringing us back sooner rather than later.

Address: 880 Holland Street, Saugatuck

Schultz Park

Relish your meal and let the kids run around the new playground at Schultz Park. The obstacle course play structure is great for kids who love to climb. You’ll also find a pavillion and pickle ball courts.

Address: 301 Riverview Dr, Douglas

Douglas Root Beer Barrel

If you need a snack or sweet treat, stop by Douglas Root Beer Barrel on your way to watch the sunset on the beach. The iconic landmark serves up hot dogs and floats at reasonable prices. Take a seat outside and enjoy the ease of summer.

Address: 501 W Center St, Douglas

Oval Beach

Oval Beach is a city beach with easy access. Pay $15 for parking and set up on the shoreline to watch the sun disappear over the horizon. Oval Beach has towering sand dunes to explore, Lake Michigan waves and perfect sightlines of the boats passing by. There is also indoor plumbing and outdoor showers. There’s no better place to end your day(s) in Saugatuck.
