Celebrate freedom in America this weekend at a Juneteenth event. Juneteenth is Monday, June 19th and there are multiple activities to check out.
New this year, the Monroe Street Midway will celebrate Juneteenth on Monday, June 19th from 12pm to 9pm. The FREE family event will feature live entertainment (poetry performances, African Dance and Drum performance, and Detroit Youth Choir performance), pop-up market and FREE Roller Skating.
This year Metro-Detroit Black Business Alliance is hosting a 3 Day Juneteenth Freedom Weekend in Detroit. Join the Beats & BBQ Block Party at Batch Brewing Company on Friday, June 16th, attend the Juneteenth Jubilee Stroll on Livernois Avenue on Saturday, June 17th and attend Freedom Fest at Eastern Market on Sunday, June 18th. On Saturday, June 24th there will be the 60th Commemorative Freedom Walk at the Detroit Branch of the NAACP.

Juneteenth commemorates the last group of American slaves learning they were free in 1865. The holiday is the perfect opportunity to celebrate freedom in America and discuss the nation’s history and present with your family. Expand your home library and buy (or borrow from your local library) books about Juneteenth. Support black owned bookstore and shop at Detroit Book City (Southfield), Sources (Detroit) or Black Stone (Ypsilanti).
