If you’re looking for a fun, educational, and affordable outing for the whole family, Belle Isle’s Dossin Great Lakes Museum should be high on your list! Perched on the shores of the Detroit River, this maritime museum showcases centuries of Great Lakes history — and offers hands-on, kid-friendly experiences that make learning feel like play.
The Dossin Great Lakes Museum offers a hands-on look at the maritime heritage of the Great Lakes with fascinating exhibits that highlight how ships, waterways, and Detroit’s riverfront have shaped the region. Families will find displays covering more than 300 years of nautical history, including the ship-sinking lore of the Edmund Fitzgerald, interactive exhibits, and real artifacts that bring history to life.
One of the museum’s newer special offerings is the “Mail by the Pail: The J.W. Westcott Company” exhibit — a unique look at how mail has been delivered to ships on the Great Lakes for more than a century. It’s a quirky, interesting story that kids can connect with, showing how communities used inventive methods to stay connected on the water.
The Dossin Great Lakes Museum is located on Belle Isle State Park: 100 Strand Drive, Belle Isle, Detroit, MI 48207. Regular hours are Friday and Saturday from 10am to 5pm and Sunday from 1pm to 5pm.
Admission is $5 for guests ages 6 and older (Detroit Historical Society Members enjoy free admission). Families of 5 or more enjoy $1 off each admission fee.
