Readers always ask us ‘Where is the Train Park?’ and everyone who goes LOVES it! Here’s everything you need to know to surprise your little train lover with a trip to David Shepherd Park.
All kids love to climb and play on the massive wooden train at Shepherd Park (I’ll admit, adults do too). From the locomotive to the caboose have fun climbing on the colorful train. Kids can load up on the equally large truck too. For traditional playtime the kids can race to the play structure featuring swings, slides and monkey bars.
Make it a story time and bring your favorite train books to read, I shared a few of my favorites are below. The Oak Park Public Library is also located on the parks grounds if you are looking for new reads.
- Trucker and Train by Hannah Stark
- Freight Train by Donald Crews
- Curious George Takes A Train by H.A. Rey
- Thomas and the Dinosaur
There are lots of amenities at the park for all seasons. Basketball and tennis courts, a paved path for stroller walks or bike rides, sledding hills and an ice rink for snowy days and an outdoor pool with spray pad features during the summer months.
