Looking for inspiration + ideas for things to do with kids in Metro Detroit? Tried and true suggestions that real moms actually do? Here they are! Hungry Howie’s appreciates Moms and joins LittleGuide Detroit in spotlighting a local Mom each week in the #MomLife series. Meet Jeannette

I’m Jeannette Washington, M.Ed. I’ve worked as a Speech Pathologist, Educator, and Software Engineer. I am the Chief Academic Officer of Bearly Articulating. Bearly Articulating is a disability think tank that offers courses, publications, and trainings that empowers tech companies as they locate talent within special needs communities. Recently, I released the book Technical Difficulties: Why Dyslexic Narratives Matter In Tech. Technical Difficulties addresses the digital divide, accessibility and so much more!

My son is 8 years old and attends a public Montessori in Detroit. We live in midtown Detroit and love all things that include the Detroit Public Library Main Branch and the DIA. My son has been bitten by the social entrepreneur bug and is planning to launch a YouTube Channel and Website this year. Stay tuned!

Favorite Ways To Spend Family Time:

  • Listening to Harry Potter audiobooks
  • Watching Pokémon
  • Traveling the state (staycations)

Favorite Places To Go:

Favorite Bedtime Stories:

Favorite Local Family-friendly Restaurants:

Best Park/Playground: Kensington Metropark (Milford) + Belle Isle (Detroit)

We love visiting Kensington Park! There are always a million and one things to do there. If we’re feeling like keeping it local (proximity-wise) we enjoy hanging out at Belle Isle. The aquarium and conservatory are our favorites.

Best Family-Friendly Annual Event: Noel Night (Detroit)

Noel Night has been a hit for us since it’s usually near Darrell’s birthday. However, we NEVER miss the Thanksgiving Day parade downtown. It’s our annual family tradition.

Your Mom Must-Have: Osmo Learning Tablet

Our tablet with the Osmo add-on’s keeps us anchored in learning. I chose this because it accomplishes engagement and enrichment simultaneously.

Best Spring Destination or Event: Cranbrook Gardens (Bloomfield Village)

After our usual winter hibernation, we love to visit the Cranbrook Gardens to witness the rebirth of foliage and the wakening of flowers.

“Pat Yourself on the Back” Accomplishment:

Honestly, when my son is watching a video or playing a game on his tablet and finds whatever he’s watching so amusing that he wants to tell me about it. I know when he enters his teenage years he won’t be so excited to include me in every single detail of his musings so I soak those all in.
