The Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History in Midtown Detroit is a great attraction for families.
For over half a century, the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History has dedicated itself to exploring and celebrating the rich cultural legacy of black Americans. Its permanent exhibit, ‘And We Still Rise’ takes visitors on a powerful through time starting across the ocean in Africa and ending in present day. You can’t help but walk through it with strong emotions. Some families may feel that the emotions are too strong for young children but it’s a great way to start conversations about hard issues.
A newer interactive exhibit about the Tuskegee Airman is great for aviation lovers of all ages. The modern display has touch screen activities throughout – guests are given a sanitized touch pen to use during the visit.
Admission to the museum is $15 for guests ages 13 and older and $12 for kids ages 3 to 12. The museum is open Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 9am to 5pm. On Thursdays the museum is open from 9am to 7pm AND offers a special admission rate – $15 for adults and kids 12 and under are FREE!
When you visit the museum you can park in front of the museum on Warren Avenue (download the ParkDetroit App) or at the DIA’s gated lot off John R Street behind the museum. The parking lot has a flat rate of $7.
