The Festival of Lights (also known as Hanukkah, Chanukah or Hannukkah) begins on December 14th and there are lots of events happening around town. Here’s a list of events to make sure you enjoy 8 “not too crazy” nights.

WonderSparks Puppets: The Troll Who Stole Hanukkah @ DIA (Detroit)

  • Saturday, December 13 – It’s a Hanukkah emergency! A fuzzy troll has stolen the Rabbi’s menorah, and only the most unlikely hero can save the day. Performed in a traditional puppet booth, this whimsical adventure is a silly yet heartwarming celebration of problem-solving, empathy, mindfulness, and friendship.

Menorah in the D (Detroit)

  • Sunday, December 14 – The Menorah In The D is a 26′ menorah which stands in downtown Detroit during Chanuka, join the annual lighting ceremony and enjoy festivities in the city. There will be crafts, games and treats for kids as well as complimentary hot soup, snacks and cider. RSVP is required.

Hanukkah @ The Henry Ford (Dearborn)

  • Sunday, December 14 – Celebrate the Festival of Lights with the Jewish Historical Society of Michigan as they share about the history and traditions of Hanukkah, like what makes the Hanukkah menorah special and how the game of dreidel was used to teach important lessons. At 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. there will be traditional Israeli dance lessons with Gail Posner, accompanied by music from members of Klezundheit, a Jewish American klezmer ensemble from Detroit.

Chanukah Wonderland (West Bloomfield)

  • Sundays, December 14 & 21 – Families will enjoy an olive press workshop, Chanukah Tot Town, Dreidel Bounce House, crafts, donut and latka making and more fun for the whole family. Admission is $10-$15

Art Menorah (Bingham Farms)

  • Tuesday, December 16th – Take part in a variety of family friendly Chanukah activities, enjoy the traditional Chanukah delicacies and join the 9th annual lighting of the Art Menorah.
